Greipel rounds off season with victory

German  fastman Andre Greipel has finished his 2008 season exactly as he started it, with his arms raised in victory in a bunch sprint.  Victorious in the Tour Down Under Classic in Australia way back in January - his first race of the year -  the Columbia rider’s final win of the season came in the Munsterland-Giro in Germany on Friday.

Greipel will now call a halt to his nine-month long season after racking up a remarkable total of 15 victories, including stages in the Tour of Italy and Tour of Germany as well as four stages and the overall of the Tour Down Under.

Team Columbia Judith Arndt has followed up her bronze medal for Germany in the World Championships time trial with a bronze medal in the road race. Arndt was part of a five rider break that went clear in the final lap of the technically challenging 138.8 kilometre road-race in Varese, Italy.

A hard-fought last few kilometres saw one attack go after another, but none of them worked out. Then in the final sprint for the line, Arndt finished third behind Nicole Cooke of Great Britain and Marianne Vos of Holland.

Team Columbia’s Bert Grabsch gave the team its first rainbow jersey at
the world road race championships in Varese, Italy on Thursday, winning
the Elite men’s time trial with a perfect ride.

Grabsch was fourth in the world championships in Stuttgart last year
and 14th in the Beijing Olympic time trial but the 43.7km course around
Lake Varese really suited his powerful and aggressive style. He set a
time of 52:01, at an impressive average speed of 50.397km/h. Canada’s
Svein Tuft was second, 42 seconds slower, with David Zabriskie of the
USA third at 52 seconds.

Judith Arndt’s amazingly successful season continued at the world road race championships on Wednesday, winning the bronze medal in the
women’s time trial.

The 32 year Team Columbia rider from Germany set a time of 34-13 for the hilly 25.15km course, finishing 21 seconds behind winner Amber Neben of the USA and 14 seconds behind second placed Christiane Soeder
of Austria.
